Under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, a re-elected majority Liberal Government will invest in heavy vehicle transport in Tasmania with support for new and existing drivers to keep the wheels rolling.
"We will support the Tasmanian Transport Association in its key role of driving the future of heavy vehicle transport in our State," Minister Ferguson said.
"These are the businesses and drivers who quietly deliver the freight we depend upon, at all hours of the day and night, from ports to freight hubs, supermarkets and factories.
"Without this industry and the drivers who underpin it, Tasmania comes to a halt.
"We support the industry to attract and retain heavy vehicle drivers with gaining their licence and training for excellence, as well as ongoing support once they are in the driver's seat."
Mr Ferguson said that a re-elected majority Liberal Government would provide $250,000 for the Tasmanian Transport Association to develop industry capability for heavy vehicle driver licensing, training and assessment.
The TTA will be further supported with:
- $440,000 for workforce development for the State's freight transport industry;
- $400,000 for the Open Road Physical and Mental Health and Wellbeing Program;
- $100,000 towards transition planning for carbon reduction and resilience; and
- a $3 million commitment to further investment in Heavy Vehicle Rest Areas at strategic locations around the State, conditional upon 20:80 funding from the Australian Government.
"We want to see more Tasmanians attracted to the heavy vehicle sector and this support package not only supports the training and development of drivers, but supports them to stay,'' Mr Ferguson said.
