Backing our World-Class Salmon Industry

Under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, a re-elected majority Liberal Government will:

  • Continue to back our world-class salmon industry and the thousands of jobs it underpins in our regions.

An important part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is to continue to support our regional communities and the jobs in those communities.

The Tasmanian Liberal Party is the strongest supporter of our world class salmon industry and we recognise the significant economic contribution aquaculture makes to our economy.

An important part of our 2030 Stronger Plan for Tasmania’s Future is to continue to support our regional communities and the jobs in those communities.

We unequivocally back salmon farming at Macquarie Harbour and have already called on the Labor Australian Government to make a quick decision in relation to Macquarie Harbour, to end the uncertainty they have created on the West Coast.

We do not believe there was a case for Labor to consider such a review of salmon activities and it could set a chilling precedent for other resource based industries in Tasmania and nationally.

A re-elected majority Liberal Government will continue to work with the salmon industry to grow Tasmania’s salmon industry, not shut it down.

We will:

  • Provide ongoing support for the salmon industry to continue to operate sustainably in Macquarie Harbour.
  • Actively support the industry’s expansion into the designated Storm Bay Growth Area and further off-shore opportunities. We will also consider reform opportunities for planning and approval processes.
  • Continue our clear commitment to no moratoriums.
  • Not introduce an arbitrary policy in relation to the phase out of Flow Through Hatcheries. Any framework relating to Flow Through Hatcheries will take into consideration the latest technical and science based expertise and date, with specific details considered through the salmon industry working group process.
  • Ensure the financial model will not change and fee units will not increase beyond reasonable indexation.
  • Recognise the significant contributions salmon companies already make to local communities when looking at ‘returns to the community’ – there will be no new “salmon taxes”.
  • Work constructively with the salmon industry in progressing the Tasmanian Salmon Plan which includes reviewing the work plan/program to identify clear priorities and the capacity of stakeholders to deliver outcomes.
  • Support the development of a longer term, holistic aquaculture vision and strategy.
