An important part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is keeping our economy strong to create the jobs Tasmanians need to ensure that Tasmania remains the best state to live, work and raise a family.

Supporting Incat and job creation

The Tasmanian Liberals support Tasmanian business and industry to create the jobs Tasmanians need.

Incat has operated in Tasmania for nearly 50 years and has led the global market in innovative design and construction of world-class, lightweight, high-speed aluminium vessels.

Incat is a significant Tasmanian employer, with more than 450 people working on the design, manufacture, sale and charter of their vessels. Incat is the largest single-site employer of trainees and apprentices in Tasmania, providing a strong base for young Tasmanians to learn and grow.

For each vessel constructed at Incat in Tasmania, around 65 per cent of the total sales price is spent and retained in Tasmania, circulating through and stimulating our local economy.

A re-elected majority Liberal Government will support Incat’s expansion plans with a 50/50 co-contribution of $5.25 million to support new training facilities, equipment, production halls, growth in floor space and Tasmania’s first marine recharging facilities.

The expansion plans will result in a doubling of Incat’s workforce and shipbuilding capacity.

This will provide a secure future for Incat employees, while strengthening Tasmania's advanced manufacturing capabilities.

Installing marine recharging facilities at Incat will support Incat’s innovative new builds and provide charging options for other vessels, including electric ferries, as the marine industry transitions to battery electric in the coming years.

The facilities will help to future-proof and prepare Tasmania for the growing demand for zero emission vessels as we extend our highly successful ferry service on the Derwent River.

This will also draw significant interest to Tasmania in the technical application of marine vessel recharging.

This infrastructure will also allow Incat to offer recharging services to other battery electric vessels operating in the River Derwent.

Net Cost: $5.25 million
