Building confidence continues

Only a re-elected majority Gutwein Liberal Government will Secure Tasmania’s Future.

In another strong sign for Tasmania’s economy and building and construction sector, dwelling approvals grew by 31.6 per cent in February - the second strongest growth rate in the country, according the latest ABS data.

Dwelling approvals in February are now 61.3 per cent higher than February last year, more than three times higher than national growth over the year.

This follows the success of our HomeBuilder package, which has bolstered housing construction in Tasmania at a pace not seen in more than a decade.

In the 12 months to February 2021, 3,697 buildings have been approved. This is the highest number of building approvals in more than a quarter of a century.

At the same time, engineering construction work grew 12.6 per cent in the December 2020 quarter in seasonally adjusted terms, bucking the trend elsewhere, which saw engineering activity contract in all other states and nationwide.

In the 2020 calendar year, $1.4 billion in construction work was completed. This comprised strong growth in heavy industry (82 per cent higher than the previous year), roads, highways and subdivisions (18 per cent higher), and water infrastructure (11 per cent higher).

With a strong economy, a pipeline of projects and jobs rebounding, only a majority Gutwein Liberal Government has a plan to Secure Tasmania’s Future.
