MAINTAIN CURRENT HUNTING SEASONS

A report into the economic contribution of recreational hunting and sports shooting in Tasmania was released in 2023.

It found the total economic contribution of the sector was estimated to be more than $88 million, including $48 million directly, and more than $40 million in flow-on contributions. Further, it identified that recreational hunting and sports shooting contributed to 438 direct full-time jobs and a further 238 indirect jobs.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has always recognised that hunting is a traditional way of life in Tasmania.

A re-elected majority Liberal Government will continue to support recreational hunting by maintaining current hunting seasons and continue to present access for hunters to game species, including wild fallow deer, wallaby, duck, quail, mutton bird and pheasant.

WILD FALLOW DEER MANAGEMENT

A re-elected majority Liberal Government will continue to implement the Wild Fallow Deer Management Plan 2022-2027 as per the agreed Implementation Strategy 2022-2027.

This will ensure the maintenance of the hunting resource in deer management zone one and providing access for hunters to deer in this zone.

We will continue to consult with the Tasmanian Game Council on the best ways to eradicate deer from encroachment upon built-up areas, with the priority being community safety.

TASMANIAN DEER ADVISORY COMMITTEE

To strengthen the representation of recreational hunters on the Tasmanian Game Council, a re-elected majority Liberal Government will appoint a representative from both the Tasmanian Deer Advisory Committee and the Australian Deer Association to the Tasmanian Game Council.

INVESTIGATE HUNTER ACCESS TO PRIVATE LAND

A re-elected majority Liberal Government will provide a dedicated property-based wildlife management planning officer within the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania to facilitate hunter access to private land to assist landowners to manage wildlife impacts.

ONLINE PORTAL FOR MANAGING ACCESS TO PUBLIC LAND

A re-elected majority Liberal Government will work with the Tasmanian Game Council to develop an online portal for managing access to public land for recreational hunters.

We will allocate $50,000 for the development of the portal.

Net cost: $50,000
