Liberals to invest in Exeter road safety

The Rockliff Liberal Government has a 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's future.

A re-elected majority Liberal Government will make improvements to the West Tamar Highway through Exeter including a safer pedestrian crossing facility.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said he met with the West Tamar Council Mayor and CEO in late 2023, and earlier this year. As a result, I instructed the Department of State Growth to walk the main street with the West Tamar Council's newly appointed planning executive.

"Key concerns to be addressed are the need for a pedestrian crossing facility as well as visibility for vehicles turning onto the West Tamar Highway, such as Murray St, turning north and Glen Ard Mohr Rd," Mr Ferguson said.

"I have personally walked and driven in the areas of concern and we will now see road and traffic experts from the Department of State Growth in touch with Council representatives to discuss problems and potential solution on-site.

"I'm pleased to say that a re-elected majority Liberal Government will provide $50,000 to both Exeter and Scottsdale for pedestrian crossings – separate to the VRUP program. This means it will not impact on their ability to apply for further funds through the program, nor will it impact on the investment available to other councils.

"We have already implemented the Vulnerable Road User Program throughout the State, delivering $15 million so far on projects to improve pedestrian safety and also protect cyclists and children.

"Through this program, funding is provided directly to local councils who have the local knowledge of what’s required in their communities. We listen, on a daily basis. And we act. Not only during election campaigns.

"We are also in the process of investigating pedestrian crossings in other areas of the State, including Margate and Snug, through the 10 year Strategic Action Plan for the Channel Highway.

"Only a Rockliff Liberal Government will continue to deliver the safer and more efficient roads for Tasmanians."
