A re-elected majority Liberal Government will deliver three new Derwent River ferry terminals over the next four years as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.
Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, said Lindisfarne, Wilkinsons Point and Sandy Bay would be added to the highly successful return of ferries on the Derwent.
“Our Government brought ferries back to the Derwent with the Bellerive service, and it’s been a raging success with more than 120,000 trips in 12 months,” Premier Rockliff said.
“We’ve listened to Southern Tasmanian commuters, and we’re acting to deliver the three more services that we know they want, Lindisfarne, Wilkinsons Point and Sandy Bay.
“The ferry expansion is tipped to take around 1,650 cars off the road in peak hours. This will go a long to saving time for families doing school drop-off and CBD workers caught in the rat-race on the Brooker Highway, Tasman Bridge and Sandy Bay Road.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said the new commuter services would deliver many benefits.
“It’s more than just a relaxing commute, the new ferry runs will also provide JackJumper fans an excellent transport option to and from the Derwent Entertainment Centre,” Minister Ferguson said.
“Construction of the new facilities will also deliver a major boost to the Tasmanian economy, creating more than 100 jobs as well as ongoing operational roles.
“We will continue to work on other priority ferry terminal locations along the Derwent River identified under the draft masterplan including Howrah Point, Kingston Beach and Regatta Point, under a future expansion.
“Our $20 million investment will capitalise on the existing Federal Government contribution to deliver the River Derwent Ferry Service Masterplan.”
Consultation and planning for the new ferry terminals will commence within the first 100 days of a re-elected majority Liberal Government.
