A Strong Plan for sport in North West Tasmania

A re-elected majority Liberal Government will invest $25 million to secure Devonport’s Building a Sporting Legacy precinct plan to redevelop the Devonport Oval.

“An important part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is to develop stronger communities and enhance our regions,” Premier Jeremy Rockliff said.

“Our Liberal Government understands that regional communities are the backbone of Tasmania – and we want to do everything we can to ensure that they can thrive.

“Through this investment we will directly support 180 local construction jobs, unlock a $60.2 million development and state-of-the-art facilities for seven sporting codes right here in the North West.

“That’s 200,000 budding sports stars getting active every year, playing basketball, netball, soccer, AFL, cricket, or participating in athletics and cycling.

“The Legacy Precinct is going to be the place where our next Olympic medallists, AFL stars and cycling champions are born and bred, and that’s an exciting thing to get off the ground.”

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street said that sport was the lifeblood of Tasmanian communities and Devonport had a rich history of producing top-level talent.

“By providing this community with a state-of-the-art sporting precinct, we’re setting future generations of North West Tasmanians up for success,” Minister Street said.

“Precincts, in particular sporting precincts, have a massive role to play in the future of Tasmania and we are excited to be investing in this opportunity for the people of Devonport.

“This investment will have wraparound benefits for the whole community, bringing a new found sense of vitality to the Devonport foreshore area while acting as a hub for sporting excellence and connection.

“I’m proud that a re-elected majority Liberal Government will unlock the entire development by providing the final $25 million required to get shovels in the ground.”
