Strong growth in engineering construction showing our Plan for Tasmania is working

The Liberals’ 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s future will continue to invest in business and industry, create more jobs and opportunities for Tasmanians.

The ABS has released today its engineering construction activity for the December 2023 quarter.

Treasurer, Michael Ferguson, said over the year to December 2023 quarter, engineering construction work done grew 9.9 per cent compared to the December 2022 quarter in real trend terms. This is a clear sign of confidence in the civil construction industry and that our Plan is working.

"On a quarterly basis, engineering construction work done in Tasmania grew 2.7 per cent in the December 2023 quarter, which was the third highest growth rate in the nation, and well above the national average of 1.8 per cent in the quarter," Mr Ferguson said.

"We also recorded the highest levels of engineering construction work since 1987 at $541 million.

“Engineering construction work totalling $2.1 billion was completed, or approximately 40 per cent more than in the last year of the disastrous Labor-Green omnishambles.

"Tasmanians can't afford a return to those dark days with a new Coalition of Chaos.

“As shown by today's Incat announcement, Tasmania's engineering sector has a bright future under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s future, but industry should be very concerned about the risks to confidence and investment as a result of backroom deals by a Labor-led Coalition of Chaos.

“A re-elected majority Liberal Government will continue to grow our economy, build confidence and deliver the biggest infrastructure agenda in Tasmania’s history that secures jobs for years to come.

“It’s only a strong economy that enables Tasmanians to put a roof over their head, put food on the table and pay their bills.

“Our Government has a proud record of supporting businesses to thrive and create jobs. We have gone from the worst-performing state under the Labor-Green minority Government to delivering historically low unemployment with 53,000 new jobs created on our watch.

"Only a majority Liberal Government will create opportunities to deliver more jobs for Tasmanians."
